The Central Delaware Advocacy Group (CDAG), a volunteer group representing community groups along the Delaware riverfront, recently released a report commenting on the progress of Philadelphia's efforts to revive the Central Delaware riverfront. The report assesses the work the City has accomplished so far in meeting the goals outlined in the Action Plan for the Central Delaware 2008-2018, a 10-step, 10-year strategic plan for the riverfront. High marks were given towards efforts to adopt zoning policies and work on the Central Delaware Master Plan, which include development and investment guidelines consistent with the Civic Vision.  CDAG also praised the work that is being done to develop new parks and make improvements to existing parks along the river.

The group was less impressed with the lack of action that has been taken in extending the City street grid to the riverfront. Adding streets like Tasker, Reed, Pier 70 Boulevard, Washington, and Brown, to the city plan would help connect existing neighborhoods to the riverfront.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A GREEN REWARD

Now every neighborhood in Philadelphia can be rewarded for recycling. With the inclusion of the Northeast, the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program is now available to all city residents. Participating households are given RFID tags to place on their blue bins to track how much they recycle.  Those numbers are then counted towards a community-wide total. Reward points are given to each participant based on the neighborhood total, and can be redeemed for gift cards or discounts at businesses.

Help the city reduce waste and earn points for your neighborhood by signing up today. If you've already signed up- start redeeming your points!

For more information about other recycling news, check out the Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia's website or sign up for the RecycleNOWPhilly newsletter.

ZONING MATTERS: COMMUNITY MEETINGS

Philadelphia is currently rewriting its sorely outdated zoning code. Now's your chance to share your ideas about how Philadelphia should be shaped through  zoning by attending one of the Philadelphia Zoning Code Commission's (ZCC) upcoming public meetings.

Public meetings serve to update residents on the progress of the newest draft of the code, and gather important public input on key changes. The third and final zoning module that is currently under review focuses on development standards.

There are two workshops left so be sure to come out to meet your neighborhoods, share your thoughts, and shape zoning policy. If you can't make the workshops, share your thoughts on the proposed development standard policies by taking the ZCC's online survey.

Final two workshops details:

Tuesday, July 27, 2010
First United Methodist Church of Germantown
6001 Germantown Avenue, 19144
6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Location TBD
6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

FUNDING FOR CLIMATE PROJECT

The international climate change campaign 350.org and Global Green Grants are teaming up to provide funding for local climate projects. Projects can be funded up to $1000 and can have a wide range of focuses, from promoting climate awareness, to advocating for alternative energy or carbon-free lifestyles. Applicants must submit projects by August 7th and the opportunity to vote for the most worthy endeavor ends August 29th.

Most of the projects will culminate in time for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, a day to celebrate climate solutions around the world. From the planting of trees to the installation of solar power appliances, participants in the international party will demonstrate the urgent importance of climate change action. Join the cause by hosting your own party, or find a local event to attend.
