PhillyCarShare has spent the past six months making structural changes to survive both the short and long term.

Now on firmer ground, the nonprofit that rents vehicles by the hour has named Gerald A. Furgione executive director. Furgione, who was appointed to the post Nov. 1, had served as PhillyCarShare's director of corporate development since 2006.

Furgione's appointment allows Eli Massar, who was serving as interim executive director, to step aside and resume his volunteer role as co-chairman of PhillyCarShare's board. It also marks the nonprofit's emergence from what has been a rocky several months, believes Massar, who was one of the five founding members of the organization in 2002.

œOver the last six months the board and I continued to change the fundamental flaws that existed in our business model, Massar said. œWe are excited about Jerry [Furgione], we think by selecting him it's a mark of our organization moving into the next phase.
