| URBAN SUSTAINABILITY FORUM TAKES ON TRANSPORTATION REFORM | | | VOLUME III, ISSUE XXII | | | |
| | The City's Fall Leaf Drive is underway from now until Dec. 18 | | | | | | | | | | | | | With the aggressive spread of sprawl, our tax dollars have been spent building thousands of miles of additional roads, highways and other infrastructure. Some of the financial resources needed for this expansion have been transferred from our older cities and towns. This pattern of development has left brownfields, decaying infrastructure, communities isolated from opportunities, and has destroyed the farmland, forests, and fields that define our countryside. At November's Urban Sustainability Forum distinguished guests from the local and national arena will explore a better way by examining how regions can work to build more sustainable communities through the federal transportation reauthorization bill that is now being formulated in Congress. Please join us, and add your voice to the conversation!
| | | THE BICYCLE COALITION HELPED FOLKS BIKE THE STRIKE | | | The SEPTA strike was as strain for folks all over the city who found themselves taking very long walks to work or waiting in bumper to bumper traffic. As the over 800,000 riders who rely on SEPTA to get to work and school scrambled to make other accommodations during the strike, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia came out in full force to make one obvious alternative, the bicycle, more accessible. Through their Bike the Strike campaign, the Bicycle Coalition provided free coffee, bike maps and safe bicycling handouts, and set up a service station and bike parking at City Hall. The Coalition's Bicycle Ambassadors were also available to assist people in planning their bike commute to work and answering technical or safety questions. SEPTA commuters are thrilled to have service reinstated, but thanks to the Bicycle Coalition's help there may be some people who aren't headed back to the bus so fast now that they have found this fun, inexpensive, active commuting alternative.
| | | PHILLY'S FALL LEAF DRIVE IS UP AND RUNNING | | | From now until to December 18, you can help the City save money, free up landfill space and give Philly's composting program a huge boost by collecting fallen leaves on your property and in your neighborhood. These leaves will be composted for use covering vacant lots, fertilizing community and public gardens, and nourishing newly planted trees throughout the city. More bags of leaves mean more fertile compost to use in our communities and less organic waste in landfills, so everyone wins! For additional details about collection check out the Fall Leave Drive website, or call 311 or (215) 686-5560 for more information.
