| PA CLIMATE ACTION PLAN WILL BRING JOBS | | | VOLUME III, ISSUE XXI | | | |
| | Supporting GREAT-PANJ will help complete the Schuylkill River Trail and the PA portion of the East Coast Greenway. Image courtesy of WRT. | | | | | | | | | | | | | Last week Mayor Nutter testified before the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee about how the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act will help cities like Philadelphia by creating green jobs (you can support federal climate legislation by emailing Senator Specter). The Pennsylvania Climate Action Plan, released for public comment on October 9, has similar potential to create tens of thousands of new jobs for cities in the state of Pennsylvania based on macroeconomic analysis. While the plan is quite comprehensive in its approach it does have some shortcomings. Greatest among them is its failure to recommend an increase in the Commonwealth's commitment to renewable energy, which will be vital to meeting the target of cutting emissions by 30 percent of 2000 levels by 2020. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is accepting comments until November 9, 2009. Take Action to let DEP know that you support an increase in renewable energy requirements to make the critical emissions reductions needed to prevent further impacts on our climate and bring jobs to the state and the city.
| | | HELP SUPPORT RIVERFRONT REVIVAL | | | It is time for Philadelphia to fill the gaps in the Schuylkill River Trail, for Pennsylvania to have a continuous East Coast Greenway connecting to New Jersey and Delaware, and for Camden, New Jersey to become a city of trails, not highways. Between the Complete the Schuylkill River Trail and East Coast Greenway campaigns, a broad network of organizations is asking that supporters of green infrastructure (you!) ask Governor Rendell to fund these trails and support GREAT-PANJ. In other exciting riverfront news, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) has announced the short list of firms being considered to develop the Central Delaware Riverfront Master Plan. On Tuesday, November 10, they will host an open house and public forum with the potential master planners. This is your opportunity to meet the consultant teams, view their qualifications and relevant work and give your input before the final award is made.
| | | SURVEY TO SHAPE OUR STREETSCAPES | | | As you know, Next Great City called for a new street furniture program to make public transit easier and safer for users. By the end of the year the City will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to provide, maintain and sell advertising for bus shelters in Philadelphia. The RFP will also invite proposals for additional pieces of street furniture, such as bus shelters, newspaper boxes, benches, and information boxes. The Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities is asking you to let them know what is important to you by completing this survey. The contract they choose will be in place for decades, so now is the time to speak up and help shape our city's streetscapes for years to come.
| | | PARKS & RECREATION WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU | | | Parks and Recreation Commissioner Michael DiBerardinis is conducting a series of meetings to discuss the merger of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park System and the Department of Recreation. The newly merged department seeks to become the nation's premier parks and recreation provider. As the department further develops its strategic objectives, it wants to hear from you to ensure that most important issues regarding parks and recreation are being addressed. Upcoming meetings on November 4 and November 5 will include an opportunity to share your thoughts, concerns and ideas. For those who are unable to attend, questions and concerns can also be sent to merger.feedback@phila.gov.
