GRID, the magazine that inspires Philadelphians to live sustainably and provides DIY tips and resources to make it happen, is back just in time for the new school year.  This month's back to school themed issue is especially great for parents, teachers, students, and citizens concerned about what is being served up in the city's school cafeterias. Check it out online or pick up a copy at locations throughout the city.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA REVITALIZATION

Things are changing in North Philadelphia.  Spurred by the city's commitment to transit oriented development, low-priced development opportunities, new and improved facilities for Temple University, and the dedication of local individuals and organizations, once blighted areas are showing signs of renewal.  Today's Daily News details some of the new projects that are bringing new life to North Philadelphia.

The Inquirer shows how revitalization spreads, with a look at the Veggie Kids program, an urban agriculture program run by Urban Tree Connection.  This program, which started in North Philadelphia and has expanded to West Philadelphia, teaches kids and teens about gardening and provides fresh vegetables to underserved communities.

U.S. - ISRAEL CLEANTECH CONFERENCE

Israel has been known for several years as "Silicon Valley II," and for good reason.  With more than 50 years of experience in water management and solar energy technologies and second only to the U.S. in start-up companies pursuing renewable energy, water efficiency and other green technology innovations, the Israeli high-tech industry has been developing and reaching new peaks each year, both in technological achievements and in sales.

The Central Atlantic Region of the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce is hosting a U.S. - Israel Cleantech Conference on Tuesday, September 15 at the University of Pennsylvania. This event will provide a rare opportunity to meet representatives from Israel's cleantech industry and explore opportunities for US-Israel cleantech growth, collaboration and development.   This full-day conference will draw from the region's most influential cleantech professionals and will provide attendees with a comprehensive roadmap for the development of clean energy products in Pennsylvania, as well as the opportunity to network with valuable industry players. WEIRD WASTE DAY IN MT. AIRY

The Mt. Airy Business Association & Valley Green Bank has partnered with the Institution Recycling Network, a cooperative that helps businesses and institutions find the most responsible, efficient and cost effective way to recycle all materials. Together, they will be hosting "Weird Waste Day" to help you get rid of your electronic waste responsibly.

This is your opportunity to properly dispose of all unwanted electronics, including: televisions, computers, printers, hard-drives, monitors, VCRs, radios, video games, transformers, and even batteries! Bring your weird waste to the Valley Green Bank parking lot on September 26 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. and they will make sure that it gets responsibly recycled.

The cost of this service is $0.32 per pound, and with it you get the piece of mind of knowing that all of your used goods are being directed to the right end market and recycled safely, in full compliance with all environmental regulations.
